22nd September – Driving Through The Hinterlands

I started the day off with a drive to the Eltham Valley Pantry.

Only to find it was closed due to a power outage.  Darn!  Well, that’s life – I might see how it’s doing tomorrow.  I drove on and a little way down the road found some workers trying to fix a power line, so I guess that’s why there was an outage.

I dropped in on the Bexhill open air cathedral, at Inspiration Point.

The cathedral itself:

Inspiration Point lives up to its name, and I took a couple of pictures of the view of Corndale valley:

Then it was off to the Channon Tavern.  I took a photo of this very picturesque hill along the way:

An interesting thing about these roads in the hinterlands is that irregularities in the road surface (pot holes, rises, whatever) are often painted quite vividly.  It’s very helpful while you’re driving, and fun to look at.  I pulled off to the side and took some photos:

I’m not sure why this is done for some and not others (though I suspect it has something to do with the proximity of people’s houses), but they’re fun little easter eggs to find along the way.

Eventually, I arrived at my lunch destination.  The Channon Tavern had a lot of old artefacts in it, even an old phone box.

Yes, that is an old lumber saw with a painting on the blade. No, I don’t know why – there was no explanation given.

This old tractor was just outside the front door.

The tavern is located right next to the river, and I had a pretty nice view from my table:

Finally, lunchtime!

I don’t usually take pictures of my food, but this pot pie and chips were delicious!  The gravy tasted like it was run-off from the pie.

On the way back into Lismore, I saw a guy hitchhiking beside the road and stopped to pick him up.  His name was Oto, a poet who recently moved to the hinterlands and was heading into Lismore to meet up with some mates.  I dropped him off along the main drag, then went to do a bit of grocery shopping – I needed some more multi-vitamins.
