Dad and I were booked in on a whale watching tour with the Blue Bay Divers today.
I’d been feeling a bit nauseous last night, so I was a bit worried when I hopped on the boat. Those worries were soon realised – I think going out at sea nudged it over from just ‘feeling bad’ into ‘vomiting’. But we still got a great look at the whales – they weren’t very playful, but they came so close to the boat! One calf came within an arm’s length!
Since I was throwing up over the side a lot, Dad was the man with the camera, so if you have an issue with these photos, take them to him!

The ‘hump’ of the humpback whale.

Mt Warning – Dad pointed out it looked a bit like a humpback whale’s back.

Me between spews.

The whales we saw weren’t very interactive above the surface, so it was mostly these kinds of photos.

A flash of the tail – the underside is surprisingly white, isn’t it?
After the trip was over, we had some fish and chips for lunch, and then Dad and I headed back to Turtle Shell. We had some lemonade and chocolate for ‘dessert’, and took a walk to the beach. I’d never been down there, and it was a pretty nice walk, with lots of butterflies and birds along the way.
The track to the beach:
Dad thought this was a field of blue flowers, then we realised it was water – a creek we had to cross:

For all that it was reflecting blue, when we were walking across the bridge we realised the water was actually tea-coloured. But it didn’t look dirty, probably because the water was clear rather than muddy.

Can you see the fish? I also got a close-up of the dragonfly:

Isn’t a beautiful blue?
We spotted this Rainbow Bee-eater in the trees:
We also found this Satin Flycatcher in the same tree:
I’m not sure what it’s doing, but it seems upset about something.
Just as we reached the beach, we found a Noisy Pitta in the scrub:

We could see the Byron Bay lighthouse from the sand:

We also spotted a sailing boat out at sea:

Then we headed back to Turtle Shell for a nice cold drink, and Dad headed back to Brisbane.
